Joel Allen Schulman, MD, Honored for Accomplishments in Ophthalmology

Joel Allen Schulman, MD, brings a wealth of practical and academic experience to LSU Health Sciences Center

    SHREVEPORT, LA, December 8, 2010 /Post Graduate PR News/ -- Dr. Joel Allen Schulman, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at LSU Health Sciences Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of ophthalmology.

A respected eye care specialist, Dr. Joel Allan Schulman recently marked his 39th year in the medical profession. He lends his expertise to LSU Health Sciences Center, where he has been conducting clinical training since 1988. As an associate professor, he presents lectures and directs third-year medical students through their rotation in ophthalmology. Dr. Schulman brings to his work a formidable combination of practical and academic experience; prior to joining LSU Health Science Center, he worked as an associate professor of ophthalmology at Southern Illinois School of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Branch, as a clinical assistant professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago, and as an ophthalmologist in private practice.

Recognized with an award by The Vitreous Society in 2001, Dr. Schulman is a respected contributor to research in his field. For a number of years, he has been conducting a clinical study relating to ocular complications in patients with Hepatitis C. He also regularly contributed to national collaborative clinical studies. Dr. Schulman is the co-author of three books, five book chapters, and nearly 60 journal articles and abstracts. He has served as a reviewer for three professional publications: Current Eye Research, American Journal of Opthalmology, and Investigative Opthalmology & Visual Science. Between 1978 and 2005, he made dozens of presentations at medical conferences.

Dr. Schulman completed his fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery in 1984 and his fellowship in retinal diseases in 1980, both at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary of the University of Illinois at Chicago. He underwent his residency from 1976 to 1979 and his rotating ophthalmic internship from 1975 to 1976 at Good Samaritan Hostpial Medical Center's Devers Eye Clinic, and fulfilled a basic science course in opthalmology in 1976 at Stanford University. Dr. Schulman obtained his MD in 1975 from Chicago Medical School and his bachelor of arts in 1971 from Goddard College.

Licensed to practice in the state of Louisiana, Dr. Schulman is a diplomate of both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the National Board of Medical Examiners. Additional affiliations include the Shreveport Medical Society, the Louisiana Medical Society, the Peyman Alumni Society, the Aspen Retinal Detachment Society, the American Society of Retinal Surgeons, the American Academy of Opthalmology, and the Association of University Professors of Opthalmology. An active member of his community, Dr. Schulman volunteers his services to various local medical initiatives. He sits on the board of directors and serves as eye clinic director of the Pool of Siloam Medical Clinic, and has functioned as head organizer of glaucoma screenings through the Statewide Lions Club. He has also participated in medical missions to Kenya. He is married with two children.
